After dire warnings about the danger of a new Chornobyl disaster, Putin yesterday accepted that the IAEA can after all travel via Ukraine to inspect the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia plant in Crimea, the large nuclear power station in Europe.
Earlier this month the U.S. State Department and the UN called for a demilitarized zone around the plant and described fighting around Zaporizhzhia as “dangerous and irresponsible.” Ukrainian officials accused Russian troops of using the plant as a nuclear shield after deploying rocket launchers at the facility and turning it into an impromptu military base. Moscow accuses Kyiv of staging “provocations”.
