We still don’t know what made the CDU candidate laugh at an inopportune moment, a joke which may well have cost Armin Laschet the chance to become the successor to Angela Merkel as Chancellor. It increasingly looks like the Socialist (SPD) leader Olaf Scholz, who came second, will end up leading a multi-coloured coalition. The re-emergence of the Social Democrats is a rarity in recent politics in Europe – actually a vanishing species.

Here, the English intellectual Andrew Adonis joins the growing band of admirers of a lifelong politician who seems – improbably – to have few enemies.
