The Maltese Prime Minister, Dr. Robert Abela, yesterday received the Public Inquiry report into the murder of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in October 2017. Parliament was convened today at 9 am.
“This extraordinary report must be the basis for a step change in the priority accorded by Malta and other European states to protecting the safety and work of journalists,” AEJ Media Freedom Representative William Horsley said today. “Never again must such a state-sponsored crime be allowed to take place. Never again must such a conspiracy of powerful political, business and criminal figures be allowed to prevail.” See full commentary here.
The Times of Malta is running a rolling report on the story, and accuses Joseph Muscat, former MEP, later Maltese PM (2017 – 20) of effectively condoning the car-bombing of the journalist. The main headline reads: “State should ‘shoulder responsibility’ for Daphne assassination – inquiry. Tentacles of impunity created from highest echelons in Castille.”
