Media freedom in Austria under attack, again

Must read

Medienfreiheit in Osterreich akut bedroht

Media freedom in Austria is in acute danger

The Association of European Journalists (AEJ) deplores the recent attacks on press freedom in Austria. Both Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and leading politicians of the FPO refused to answer any questions from media representatives at “press conferences”, which should not be called that anymore. This violates the freedom of the media and is thus customary only under authoritarian regimes or in dictatorships. In addition the scandal video of Ibiza proved once again the contempt of media freedom by the resigned FPO boss Heinz Christian Strache. He cursed journalists as whores. And he announced to a supposed niece of a Russian oligarch that he wanted to silence critical media on the model of Viktor Orban in Hungary in silence or in line. At the same time he spoke out for the privatization of the ORF and for the purchase of the “Kronen-Zeitung”, where he wanted to replace critical journalists by compliant. Only recently, the FPO’s leading candidate for the European elections, Harald Vilimsky, threatened ORF-journalist and anchorman Armin Wolf during an interview. The chairman of the board of trustees of the ORF, former FPO-leader Norbert Steger, wanted to punish some critical ORF correspondents by closing the offices. The Association of European Journalists (AEJ) will bring these events to the attention of the OSCE and the Council of Europe. The contempt for freedom of the media by politicians from the OVP and FPO in Austria has reached a level that runs counter to the fundamental values of the EU.
