Freedom of expression and journalists’ organisations appeal for EU concrete steps to protect human rights in Turkey

Text: The AEJ has joined PEN International and a group of other international freedom of expression organisations in a joint statement on Turkey. The statement was communicated to the European Union at an event in Brussels hosted by the International Press Institute on Wednesday, on the theme of “How the EU can support Press Freedom in Turkey“https://ipi.media/turkey-how- the-eu-can-support-press- freedom-and-uphold-democracy- dec-6-brussels/.

 

 

The joint statement called on EU states to exert influence on Interpol not to abuse Red Notices which have allegedly been used by Turkey to persecute journalists, as part of a comprehensive strategy to counter the effects of Turkey’s abuse of criminal proceedings to silence critical voices, including journalists, human rights defenders and other civil society voices.
