Council of Europe States want “impact and visibility” for renewed efforts to protect journalists and media freedom

Deputies (Ambassadors) of the Council of Europe’s 47 States, meeting in Strasbourg on 18 January 2012, resolved to strengthen the impact and visibility of activities to protect the safety of journalists, media independence and human rights on the Internet. Leading European NGOs have repeatedly pressed European governments and top officials of the Council of Europe to fulfil pledges made more than two years ago to take concrete actions to ensure respect for freedom of expression, and halt the misuse of anti-terrorism laws which interfere with the fundamental right to free expression. The Ministers’ Deputies also called for more efforts to foster ethical journalism.
