William Horsley, AEJ’s Media Freedom Representative, has given his signature for the AEJ, as one of 43 concerned organisations and individuals, to a letter sent on 7 October 2009 to Mr Thorbjoern Jagland, newly elected Secretary-General of the Council of Europe. It asks him to inform journalists and civil society organisations what is being done to ensure that member states carry out reviews of their anti-terrorism laws and practices to make sure they do not violate agreed standards of freedom of expression, as per the Resolution passed at the Council of Europe meeting of ministers responsible for media issues in Reykjavik, Iceland in May 2009. The follow-up to the Resolution on reviewing anti-terrorism laws is on the agenda for the CoE’s Media Steering Committee which will meet in Strasbourg on 20 to 23 October.
