May 5 2009 marks sixty years since the signing of the London Treaty which set up the Council of Europe as an inter-governmental watchdog for democracy and human rights. Evidence of the damage done to free expression and media freedom by recent anti-terrorism legislation will be debated at an Experts Forum on May 27 in Reykjavic, Iceland. On May 28 and 29 the AEJ and other international media organisations will attend a ministerial conference there on the theme “A New Notion of Media?” Many AEJ national sections are staging debates and other events around May 3 to mark this year’s World Press Freedom Day.
