The Association of European Journalists (AEJ) proudly awarded the 2009 European Journalism Prize to Miguel Ángel Aguilar, a highly respected Spanish journalist known for his lifelong dedication to press freedom and independent journalism.

The award was presented during a special ceremony alongside the “Konstantinos Kalligas Awards”, with Takis Arapoglou, President and CEO of the National Bank of Greece, sponsoring the AEJ European Journalism Prize and personally handing over the award to Aguilar.

About Miguel Ángel Aguilar

Miguel Ángel Aguilar has been a leading voice in European journalism, advocating for the freedom of information and the independence of the press—long before the restoration of Spanish democracy. His work has played a pivotal role in supporting free press initiatives in former communist countries, particularly in Poland, helping to establish independent media in transitioning democracies.

Currently, Aguilar is a columnist for El País, a commentator on TVE (Spanish Television), and a member of the editorial board of the influential European affairs magazine Europe’s World. His ability to combine sharp political analysis with deep journalistic integrity has made him a prominent figure in European media.
