Juan-Paolo Accardo, AEJ’s man in Brussels

The AEJ’s Brussels representative Gian-Paolo Accardo, also editor-in-chief of Voxeurop, writes: If there is a before and after 2022 for Europe, with the wave of geopolitical upheaval triggered by the war in Ukraine, as well as the effect of that war on an entire generation of Europeans, 2024 has all the makings of a new milestone.

A “super-election year” with almost half the world’s population summoned to the polls, including a record number of Europeans, it will see the more than likely re-election of Vladimir Putin in Russia, the probable return of Labour to power in the UK, a potential breakthrough for far-right parties in the European elections, and, finally, a presidential election with all to play for in the USA.
The outcome of the last two of these elections will have lasting consequences for the future of our continent and the direction of European integration, as well as the world at large. We discuss the stakes with Timothy Garton Ash, British historian and journalist (and member of Voxeurop‘s ethics committee).
His latest book, Homelands, A Personal History of Europe (2023), has been translated into several languages.
The event is tomorrow, February 6, 12:30pm CET. It will be moderated by Catherine André and myself, in English.
