So will the prospects for Europe – indeed for the whole planet – of a war which has and had no sane rationale. Some of the most prescient analysis has appeared in Foreign Policy, which poses some key questions, such as What if Ukraine wins?
What is clear is that Europe has found some genuine solidarity, however imperfect. The real test will come, as Putin no doubt gambles, if the conflict becomes a grisly, never-ending war of attrition – a war which in fact began not three months ago but with the seizure of Crimea in 2014.
