In a keynote speech at the AEJ’s Congress in Maastricht on 20 November Thomas Hammarberg called for renewed efforts to bring to justice all responsible for the murders of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya and of leading journalists in Turkey, Ukraine and Azerbaijan in recent years. The CoE Human Rights Commissioner appealed for more “concrete action” by European governments to protect freedom of the media. He welcomed the AEJ’s cooperation in gathering information about abuses and upholding the duty of the press to hold governments to account.
