The Association of European Journalists (AEJ) expresses deep concern over the decision by President Donald Trump to close Voice of America (VOA) and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL). This unprecedented move threatens press freedom, independent journalism, and the public’s right to access uncensored information.
For decades, these institutions have played a crucial role in providing objective reporting to audiences worldwide, particularly in regions where independent media are under threat. Their closure would represent a serious setback for democracy, media pluralism, and the values of free speech that the United States has long championed.
We urge the U.S. administration to reconsider this decision and reaffirm its commitment to supporting independent journalism and global press freedom. At a time when disinformation and authoritarian influence are on the rise, shutting down such vital news organizations would only weaken democratic resilience and embolden those who seek to suppress the truth.
The AEJ stands in solidarity with journalists at VOA and RFE/RL and calls on the international community to defend media freedom as a fundamental pillar of democracy.
