The feared victory of discredited nationalist and pro-Russian ex-Prime Minister Robert Fico in the Slovak elections – or at least the beginning of messy coalition talks – did after all happen.
It has unleashed numerous speculations and
commentary in the European press, above all what it means for Slovakia’s position on supporting Ukraine (Fico wants to stop it), and on winning a like-minded ally in Hungary and its fellow-nationalist, Putin-friendly, premier Viktor Orbán. Neither is a friend of independent media.
As always, Eurotopics is invaluable in taking readers through the reactions of the European press.
