The Board of the International Association of European Journalists last night called for the Austrian state to seek a new owner for the state-owned Wiener Zeitung, founded in 1703 and the oldest surviving daily in the world, or to seek other ways to ensure its survival as an independent newspaper. Noting the growing international support for saving the title, we ask as a minimum for an immediate stay of execution until these possibilities have been properly explored.
