More than 400 people attended this year’s ceremony of the annual «Konstantinos Kalligas» Journalism Awards, which have been established since 1997 by the Greek section of the Association of European Journalists.
With these awards, the AEJ honors the ethos and European orientation of journalists, citizens and organizations that contribute to the qualitative upgrading of the political and social life of the country through their work.
«Konstantinos Kalligas was a nobleman of Greek and European journalism, who had a deeply rooted democratic conscience and, along with Takis Lambrias, George Anastasopoulos, Eleni Varopoulou, Athanasios Papandropoulos and Alexander Velios, had founded the Greek section of the AEJ» stressed the co-President of the Greek Section Fanis Zouropoulos.
For the year 2017, the journalists Philippos Zacharis (Iatronet.gr), Tasos Telloglou (Kathimerini, Skai), Sophia Papaioannou (Alpha TV), Soti Triantafyllou (Ta Nea, Athens Voice), Natasa Bastea (Ta Nea) and Maria Fernanda Gabriel (Portuguese Broadcasting Corporation) were awarded by the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr Prokopios Pavlopoulos.
Honorary mentions were also given to the writers Antonis Zairis and Giorgos Stamatis, the journalist and former MEP Manolis Mavrommatis, the publishing house ‘’Kritiki” and its founder M. Minoglou, the businessman Nikos Papapostolou and the “Papapostolou SA” company that completed 103 years of action,the Philosophy Professor Pericles Vallianos and the Head of the Permanent Representation of the European Commission in Greece Panos Karvounis. Also, the book «The Biography of Europe» by PanagiotisDrakopoulos’s – which was issued by the insurance company Prime- was presented in the event.
The ceremony began with a minute’s silence for the tragic death of the Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was killed by a bomb placed in her car as she was trying to uncover scandals of the local government. In his introductory speech, the Honorary International President of the AEJ, Athanasios C. Papandropoulos, spoke about the personality of Konstantinos Kalligas, who, as he said, «could connect the world with the man through Democracy».
For his part, the President of the Hellenic Republic referred to the European journalists’ struggle to defend Europe, as its role is planetary and outnumbers its peoples. «Europe will not stand out as a military or economic power within capitalism. Its power through its unification is to defend universal principles and values - peace, democracy and, above all, social justice», Mr. Pavlopoulos said.
Panos Karvounis stressed that the European Union can better preserve the cohesion of member states than they can do themselves. Also, speaking for the post-memorandum Greece, he noted that we owe as Greeks to become pragmatists and to deal with the distortions of the past. As far as the political system is concerned, he noted that now that there is a consensus on reforms, we need to focus on the country’s strong assets and have the appropriate stability in order to attract investments. «The Greeks are and will remain Europeans», said the Head ofthe Permanent Representation of the European Commission in Greece, highlighting that there is still a wind blowing on the sails of the EU.
Lastly, the statement of journalist and President of the Association of European Parliamentarian Journalists, Maria Fernanda Gabriel, was quite moving, as she dedicated her prize to the memory of Daphne Caruana Galizia.
