UNESCO’s director in charge of freedom of expression, Guy Berger, made a landmark speech to the World Editors Forum in Kiev this month. His triple request to the world’s media to combat violence against journalists and impunity was this: monitor, participate and report fully on attempts to silence the media by violence or threats.
