On 7 October 2011 it will be five years since the murder of Anna Politkovskaya. To commemorate her death and raise awareness of the importance of investigative journalism and protecting journalists’ safety, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatovic has issued a major report Protection of Journalists from Violence. And Thomas Hammarberg, the Council of Europe’s Commissioner for Human Rights, published a Human Rights Comment calling on governments and media organisations to protect the lives and professional rights of journalists.
