A delegation from the AEJ* met with the Vice-President of the European Commission, Mrs. Margot WallstrA¶m, on the day following the launch of the Commission’s White Paper on ’EU Communication and Democracy’. The delegation had the opportunity to present the AEJ and its programme; and to discuss the White Paper. Two main topics of particular interest to the Commissioner from the AEJ programme were: Freedom of the Press (including World Press Freedom Day, May 3) and the ’European Project’.
The AEJ will follow up the White Paper by contributing to the official consultation and commenting on the working draft of EurActiv’s ’Yellow Paper on EU communication’. A working group has been established, chaired by Fred Sanders of the AEJ section in The Netherlands. The approach recommended by the working group will be discussed at the meeting of the AEJ Executive Committee in June.
* Peter Kramer, International Secretary-General of the AEJ, led the delegation on February 2, and was accompanied by David Haworth and Pascale Bourgaux.
