1. AEJ website revamped

Have a look at www.aej.org! Thanks to Christos Trikoukis, the new appointed AEJ deputy secretary-general, the website of the association has a new look. Also thanks to financial support of the Greek, Irish, Belgian, Spanish and Italian sections and individual contributions. On the website you can find also more information about the subjects below.

2. AEJ Executive Meeting in Athens, February 13, 2009

Hosted by the Greek AEJ section, 25 members of the executive committee had a fruitful meeting in Athens. Most important decisions taken were to start officially with the new style website, to approve the financial report 2008 and to appoint Christos Trikoukis as deputy secretary-general of the association. Other important subjects: an    evaluation of the AEJ Congress 2008 in Linz; the theme for the AEJ Congress 2009 in Maastricht and how the AEJ sections can approach World Press Freedom Day 2009. The hospitality of the Greek section was, as always, excellent!

3. AEJ Journalist Prize for Miguel Angel Aguilar (13 Feb) 

In a ceremony in the Theodoros Karatzas hall of the National Bank of Greece, the European Journalism Prize of the Association (AEJ) has been awarded to the well-known Spanish journalist Miguel Angel Aguilar (also secretary-general of AEJ Spain). Mr. Takis Arapoglu, President and CEO of the National Bank of  Greece (the sponsor of the AEJ European Journalism Prize), handed over the award to Mr. Aguilar.

4. Kalligas Award (AEJ Greece) for Jean Quatremer (13 Feb) 

AEJ Greece celebrated its annual ‘Konstantinos Kalligas Award’ ceremony in the ‘Theodorakis Karatzas’ hall of the National Bank of Greece, in the presence of Mrs. Rodi Kratsa, Vice-President of the European Parliament. Five Greek journalists and the well-known French journalists Jean Quatremer were awarded.         

5. 47th AEJ Congress in Maastricht, 19 - 22 November 2009

With the support of the City of Maastricht and the provincial government of Limburg, the Dutch section of the AEJ is preparing the 47th Annual Congress of the AEJ, in Maastricht. Theme of the congress will be the successes and failures of European regional cooperation, focussing on case studies of the so-called Euregio’s.

6. AEJ delegation to visit Turkey 11-14 May

A delegation of AEJ executive committee members and colleagues of different AEJ sections will bring a visit to Turkey from 11 till 14 May. Vice-President Jozsef Horvath is chair of the delegation. Meetings with the Turkish President and the Turkish MP are foreseen in the programme, prepared by AEJ Turkey.

7. World Press Freedom Day 2009,  May 3.

In 2008 many AEJ sections celebrated WPFD. And also this year many sections are preparing special meetings, often in cooperation with other organisations, to pay attention to the threats to media freedom and independence in Europe. Ask your section for more information.

8. Busy time for AEJ Media Freedom Representative

Since the AEJ received official observership by the Steering Committee on Media Freedom of the Council of Europe, William Horsley (AEJ Media Freedom Representative) is busier then ever. On the AEJ website you can find all the information about his activities and about the involvement of the association with the subject of Media Freedom in Europe.
